The price of air conditioner installation varies more than most people expect. The same unit can be fitted for 15,000 or 35,000 RSD, depending on the room's location, wall thickness, pipe run length and what the technician has included in the quote. This article breaks down what drives the price and what to check before accepting an offer.
What Is Included in a Standard Installation
When a technician says "standard installation", this usually means:
- Drilling a hole through the wall (standard thickness up to 30–40 cm)
- Mounting the indoor unit (evaporator) on the wall
- Mounting the outdoor unit (condenser) on brackets against the wall or balcony railing
- Connecting copper pipes up to 3–4 metres
- Electrical connection (cable to the nearest socket or distribution box)
- Refrigerant charge if the unit arrives pre-charged (in a sealed installation)
- Test run and verification in both modes (cooling and heating)
What Is Charged Extra
Any deviation from the standard scenario adds cost:
- Each additional metre of copper pipe — 500–1,200 RSD/m, depending on diameter (¼" for smaller units, ⅜" for larger)
- Drilling reinforced concrete wall — 2,000–4,000 RSD more than standard brick
- Installing channels and decorative trunking to conceal pipes — 1,500–4,000 RSD for the whole run
- Roof brackets or high-level mounting (4th floor and above without a lift platform) — 3,000–8,000 RSD
- Refrigerant top-up if the system leaked or pipes are longer than factory charge — 3,000–6,000 RSD per charge
- New cable and breaker — 2,000–5,000 RSD if no dedicated AC circuit exists

Belgrade
- Standard installation (up to 2.5 kW, pipes up to 3 m): 12,000–18,000 RSD
- Installation for 3.5–5 kW unit (typical living room): 15,000–24,000 RSD
- Multi-split system (one outdoor, two indoor units): 25,000–45,000 RSD labour
Pančevo
- Standard installation up to 2.5 kW: 10,000–15,000 RSD
- 3.5–5 kW unit: 13,000–20,000 RSD
- Fewer available technicians; worth booking at least a week ahead, especially in season (June–August)
Valjevo
- Standard installation up to 2.5 kW: 9,000–13,000 RSD
- 3.5–5 kW unit: 12,000–18,000 RSD
Seasonal tip: Installers are extremely busy in July and August. If you buy a unit in May or June, you can negotiate a lower price and a guaranteed slot. The same applies to spring installation — before the heat sets in.
How to Recognise a Quality Installation
A poor installation means higher electricity bills, a shorter unit lifespan and frequent repairs. Pay attention to the following:
- Copper pipes must be insulated with thermal wrap along their entire length — an unprotected pipe means condensation and cooling loss
- The outdoor unit must be mounted level (the compressor needs a flat surface)
- The condensate drain must run downward to the outside or into a drain pipe — it must not drip into the wall
- The technician must vacuum the system before charging with refrigerant (if pipes are not factory length) — skipping this step shortens compressor life
Warning: If the technician doesn't mention vacuuming and charges refrigerant straight away — that's a poor installation. Always ask whether they use a vacuum pump and how long they vacuum for (minimum 30 minutes).
Annual AC Service — Why It Matters
An air conditioner should be serviced once a year — before the season (April–May). Cleaning the filters and fins, checking refrigerant pressure and inspecting the electrics costs 3,000–6,000 RSD in Belgrade, but extends the unit's life by years and reduces electricity consumption.
